Charter and Scope

The Technology Advisory Committee (TAC) is a committee of the SCC Board of Members (“Board”). At a mission level, the TAC will support the Consortium by identifying and advancing the computational goals of its member institutions and the engagement of their data in the global biodiversity research enterprise. With expertise that extends and diversifies that of the Board and staff, the TAC will offer technical insight to increase awareness of campus, national, and global research computing infrastructure trends and advances. The Committee will advise on new computing requirements, relevant technologies, and initiatives, as well as on technical strategies for attaining the cyberinfrastructure goals of the Consortium.

Responsibilities and Roles

  • To maintain the Consortium’s awareness of emerging data communication standards and technologies, in particular how they could improve the robustness, capabilities, and user experience of Consortium’s software and service products.
  • To gather input from within the Consortium and from the broader biodiversity informatics community, to provide insight and recommendations on how Consortium software and services can be designed and engineered to meet the evolving requirements of the Consortium’s institutional members and those of the broader biodiversity informatics community.
  • To provide evaluation of existing Consortium development processes, in particular their completeness, conformance with best practices for improving technical goal setting, software life cycle management, transparency, communication, efficiency, and effectiveness.
  • To assist with the development of funding proposals to support technology collaborations among the SCC partners for novel, innovative capabilities and services for the benefit of all of its members.
  • To serve as a liaison to other relevant biodiversity informatics organizations and initiatives, to foment technical collaboration with them, and to advocate for the Consortium within the biodiversity and earth science collections communities.
